Passport? or IM?

At home I have msn (through the phone company, so I can get DSL), and to kill off the IM client takes a reboot, then renaming the executable. Every service pack from MS reinstalls the client.

Find out the process, create a temporary admin account, take ownership of the directory that process starts from MS Messenger (most likely), then deny rights to that directory to all other users. Then delete the temp admin account. Used to work for gator/claria infections also: directory was there, so it wouldn't reinstall, but no account was allowed to run it, which prevented popping up.

Alternatively, check for viruses and spyware. It would not surprise me that some brand new trojan is pretending to be a logon box.

You can run MSCONFIG via the Run... in the start menu and select the "Startup" tab... from there you can stop it from starting up when Windows boots etc...
