Visual Basic.NET & mySQL.

Hi,

I am doing a data mining project, and will need to do OLAP, etc. for which I will be using mySQL. I plan to keep my front tend as Visual Basic.NET.

Are there any ODBC drivers for VB.NET ?

Thanks,

You can download a managed ODBC provider from somewhere on MSDN; not quite sure where.

However, your best bet would be to try and find a managed provided for MySQL rather than go through the extra layer of ODBC->ADO.NET.

Take a look at http://www.mysql.com/articles/dotnet/ - it gives a good overview of your options.

A managed ODBC provider will be included with the next version of the framework (currently in beta).  There are two managed MySql providers available.  The first one is from MySQL AB.  Distributing the engine/driver with a commercial software package can be expensive.  (And all this time I thought 'open source' meant 'free').  Their provider is not yet complete, but apparently it is usable.

The other managed provider is from a company called eInfo Designs.  Here is a link to the relevant page:

It is apparently complete, and the price seems reasonable.

Do my a favour?  If you decide to use one of these could you come back and let us (me) know how things went.  I'm current developing for MDBs, but I know that won't cut the mustard for long, and am look for alternatives.  Thanks.

Minor clarification: the ODBC managed provider shipping with the 1.1 Framework is already released software; what's new is that they're rolling it into the Framework. But you can download it to use with the 1.0 Framework from http://msdn.microsoft.com/downloads/default.asp?URL=/downloads/sample.asp?url=/MSDN-FILES/027/001/668/msdncompositedoc.xml
