can a browser read from serial port

I have an app already written in C#.Net that reads from a serial port GPS device and parses out the LAT/LNG from the data stream. Now I am trying to integrate that into a browser plugin

I need to write a plugin for a browser so it can read from the serial port of the local machine. This is so the app can get data from the local GPS device. Can someone point me in the right direction with .Net and how to do this.

The end result I am after is a web page with 2 text boxes, latitude/longitude and then a browser plugin that will read from the serial port and when the user clicks the "aquire" button the current gps data will be entered into the two text boxes.

Something like this

-------------------------------------------

Latitude:    [________]
Longitude: [________]

---------------------------------------
Current location:

lat: xxxxxxx
lng: xxxxxxx

    [ Aquire ]
---------------------------------------

any help is appreciated.

sounds like you want an activex control.
there's a newer .net equivalent too, someone has mentioned it on this forum before.
all you need is an invisible control with some methods or properties which return the relevant info, then your script calls them & writes the values into the html.

I guess that would be a BIG security hole. A really BIG one...
