I don't know... I just ordered one and the shipping tracking indicated it came from Hong Kong. My guess is that costs in Hong Kong are too high for manufacturing, but just over the border in Guangdong Province there are lots of big factories.

So, I would bet that my particular Thinkpad was made in Guangdong somewhere.

The secret phrase you are looking for is "Original Design Manufacturer" or ODM. You'll probably have to do a little digging, but a Google search like this one http://www.google.com/search?q=IBM+original+design+manufacturer+laptop yeilds some interesting results.

IBM has a plant in India at Pondichery where they assemble the Thinkpads.

There should be a label on the bottom of your ThinkPad telling where it was manufactured. Mine have come from Japan and Mexico.

I think IBM manufactures most ThinkPads themselves, although the i series (and maybe some others) were built by Acer.
