Xen, X#, C Omega, whatever Microsoft is calling it this week, tackles this problem head-on, and rolls in XML native types as well:

Having done a lot of work marshalling data in & out of SQL databases, and recently XML documents, I am looking forward to having at least some of it boiled into syntax.
