How to start a tech shop

So, how do you quit your day job and start a tech company?

I've read my share of "how to be an enterpreneur" books, but there are things like those questionable non-compete clauses and such, which are specific to the tech industry.

And what would you tell a group of bright people with no rich uncles or heavy VC connections?

That's a huge question. I don't know if I can answer it in one or two paragraphs.

If you feel like you don't know how to start a tech shop, that can be a good sign or a bad sign. It's a good sign if it means you have humility and lack hubris. It's a bad sign if it means that you don't know what you're doing!

I am fairly cautious in my nature and I didn't start Fog Creek until I pretty much understood everything I was going to do. It helped that Philip Greenspun had an instruction book:

Of course Philip's idea of consulting for people to built dotcoms turned out to be wrong, but by then it was too late and we were already committed :)
