Why did you leave Microsoft?

Why did you leave Microsoft?

After a couple of years in Seattle I noticed that I had more friends in New York than in Seattle, so I transferred from the Microsoft Excel team to the Microsoft consulting group in New York City.

Consulting didn't agree with me, and MCS was a particularly horrid place to work, so I left the company shortly thereafter.

In 1998 I calculated that this move cost me $7 million in forfeited stock options. Living in New York also meant that I met Jared, so it was the best $7m I ever spent!

Did you do the calculation before or after meeting Jared?
