CD Designer using separate data

Is there an easy way to apply continuous changes to a CD design "post-live", if the Designer has restricted access to the CD "production" data only?

This should be the scenario in many shops concerned with life cycles etc., too.

I.e., is there an easy way to update a CD design, using small volumes of data/ articles for testing, and once complete, apply the new design to the production data?

The simplest way would be to clone the CityDesk file. The designer tinkers with the templates in the clone, using local previews to get it right. Then when you want to go live you cut and paste the new templates into the original CityDesk file.

A one-file solution would be to have a "test" template family where the designer plays with new ideas for templates. When you want to adopt the new ones you delete the old template family and rename the test template family.

Sometimes there are more elements to a design than the templates. e.g., variables, images, articles $include$d, etc.

Ideal would be an "Apply design from other .cty file" option on the menu.

Come to think of it, such a feature would be very helpful when starting to create a new site, too.
