Email Subscription - like on the Fog Creek site

I would like to give users the ability to subscribe to an email list.

Joel uses whatcounts - is this easy to add to a CityDesk site.

I would like a free version - this is for a volunteer site.

TK - thanks for your post.

I only want to collect email addresses from my site - not start a group.

i.e. when people sign up - I will occationally send them emails.

You will need some coding on the server side.  Its very easy to do.  I have my server side code send email to my subscription address.

However, you can also include a link like this:

<a href="mailto:yourname@company.org?subject=Please Subscribe me">Subscribe</a>

This works only if the user has an email program.  But it is awfully simple.  You then get email with the subject shown from whoever wants to be on your list.

I'm with Joel G. for the simplest possible solution that you can implement right now.

Many hosting service provide mailing list services as part of their hosting packages. They'll provide the HTML for a subscription form. You can set one up in a few minutes. Your host may have that service already. If you have many subscribers, the list will save you time and give users a way to remove themselves at their convenience.
