What is "<br />"

I haven't been paying attention and try to avoid HTML at all times but what is "<br />"

Is it the new improved <br>?

I think that's the XHTML shorthand for <br></br>

XML requires all tags to be explicitly closed.

xhtml requires all tags be closed.  So, <br /> is the new syntax for <br>.

One note:  You rarely (if ever) need br if you use stylesheets.

Here is a great CSS resource:
http://css-discuss.incutio.com/?page=FrontPage

Its the WIKI (sort of a group editable site) that is part of the CSS-D discussion list.

Specifically about <br>.  It just performs a line break.  Sometimes people use it instead of using <p> ...</p> for paragraphs.  Other times, a list makes more sense.  Many menus can be done with lists (and css) that might have been tried with <br> tags.

Do you have a specific example?
