xhtml vs html for fogcreek metatag

I'm not sure that any browser cares, but when I validate my html, it burps on the fog creek metatag:
<meta name="generator" content="Fog Creek CityDesk 2.0.5" />

Could a switch be put somewhere to let the developer select between this xhtml syntax, and html syntax for this tag.  The only difference is html doesn't like the end slash

Maybe fogcreek could even have the standard doctypes as built in variables and let the developer choose one.  This would let fogcreek know how to build their metatag.  It would also be convenient.  If others are like me, they keep scrounging around for their bookmark to a list of valid doctypes
