Is there a way to give a variable a value in the p

Gerat product.  Variables used everwhere, but in HTML pages I'm using the same headers etc as in my articles.
ie: I've made variables such as {$.page_header$} and {$.page_top_box$} which contain standard HTML used in templates and in my HTML pages.  In each of those page header variables I've got variables such as keywords, page headins etc

BUT

in the HTML pages some variables from the article pages don't exist, so I wish to make them on the fly in each page.

Therefore I wish to define the standard values such as {$.headline$},  {$.teaser$} so that the header code is always the same.

Can I do someting like SET {$.headline$} = "Fog Creeks Great Stufff" in my page above?

Not in this version. I hear the next version will use JavaScript and will be much more robust.

In the meantime, do what I do and make the title:

<title>www.marktaw.com - {$.headline$}</title>

This way at least you have something in all of your headlines. Plus, the site name before the page title is good for search engines, links, etc. Too many sites have one or the other, but not both.

Would a ifblank / ifnonblank work in this situation?
