UI pet peeve
Given Joel's writings on UI design, I was rather surprised to see that CityDesk had one of the most common and annoying UI errors - useless icons.
Personally, I have always hated icons on toolbars and menus - the proof that they are a fundamentally flawed concept is the fact that "bubble help" had to be invented to fix the problem of users needing help interpreting those tiny meaningless graphics on buttons.
CityDesk gives you three options: Large Icons with Text, Large Icons Only, or Small Icons Only. So what about Text Only? One design feature that Netscape Navigator and Opera had/have is the choice of text-only buttons.

Every user may have his own feeling about Icons.
In my own case, I love "text+ icons" options when I begin to use a software, and I like to switch to "small icons only" when I become more experienced.
IMHO, citydesk Icons are not useless.
But I agree with you when you say that a "text only" option should be available, for those who prefer it.
