Website Hosting

I'm looking for recommendations regarding hosting possibilities.  I'm developing a simple site.

Who do you recommend?  (Though price is a consideration, so is good customer service.)

Equally important, who do you NOT recommend?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

For Unix-based hosting (FreeBSD), I used and loved Pair[1]. The only reason I left them was because I needed Windows-based ASP.net hosting. I chose ORCS Web[2], which was expensive a tad more expensive, but their service has been really top notch for my needs.

I second that pair reccomendation. I can't comment on customer service as they just implemented phone customer service. Their e-mail cust. service is very good.

You really can't beat their $5/mo 100mb package for small static sites.

I know some people who are very pleased with Hostrocket if you need more space (350mb) / more complex hosting (php, cgi, database), and all for $10/mo.

I've been happy with ReadyHosting.  500 mb of Windows 2000 hosting plus extras for $99 per year.

My site is hosted at PowWeb.

I've been happy so far. The only outage I've encountered lasted less than a day. Customer service has been good. They have one plan and your site is easily self-administered. Their price is $7.77 a month.

Besides looking at the features and services each webhost offers, you should visit a few sites at each host to get an idea of the speed of their servers.

My site is:

I compose my pages using CityDesk and post them through FrontPage.

BTW, many webhosts have a referal plan. After you check around, if you sign up with one of the services we are recommending, please be sure to let them know who referred you.

For rock bottom prices, I can recommend 123ehost.com. I haven't had too much need for customer service, though the couple of emails I've sent have gotten pretty quick responses (well under a half hour). I only use very basic hosting (web and email, no scripting, though they can provide PHP and ASP for an extra fee), but I certainly can't complain about the price: $50/year.

A friend of mine recently mentioned angelfire as a free web host. You get the angelfire popups, but they host your site (with domain) for free. Here's my friend's site:
