Reducing the number of windows

Each time I use the preview function, I see a new browser window, which I later have to close.  Perhaps CD could reuse an existing browser window?

Similarly, I would not mind at all if the Status screen could be configured to launch the browser ( and either run minimized or invisibly or shut itself down) when it was Done, instead of forcing the user to click the "Internet Explorer" button.

Its actually an Internet Explorer setting, not CityDesk.
Go to Tools->Internet Options->Advanced Tab.
Check off "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts".

Yes, I could tell IE to reuse browser windows, but that affect my desktop behaviour when I'm not using CD.

I don't know if the proliferation of browser windows will be an issue in real life. I'm about to build a "real" site, and will find out.

Perhaps the ability to drag something from the publish window onto the (already opened) browser window would do the trick?

What I do is just Ctrl+R refresh the same IE window after publishing, instead of clicking on the IE button again.
