Photo Site

There was a request a long time ago about using CityDesk to create a photo site with thumbnails etc.

http://discuss.fogcreek.com/citydesk/default.asp?cmd=show&ixPost=517

I just repaired my digital camera and I'm thinking about trying to use CityDesk to replace the semi manual method I've been using to create my photo pages.

I was wondering if anyone has attempted this and if so what methods were used.

I'm imagine I could drag all the images into a folder in CityDesk and then manually create an article for each photo and insert it.    Maybe stick a thumbnail image in an extra field.  Then use a script to parse all the articles and create an index getting the thumbnails from the extra field.

Can I use a for loop to go through all the images in a folder and somehow build a page for each and a thumbnail page?

This may be similar: a real estate site

Here is the discussion:

Here is the page it produced:

Nice looking site.

Can this example be put back up also? or is it the same?

I still have the sample real estate .cty file if you want it.

You can check out the beginnings of my photo album at:

I really just use it to keep track of photos I've entered in competitions, for my own future reference. I'm just getting started with photography, so there's not a lot there yet.

I'll try to write an article soon about how I add new photos to the page. It's not all that hard, thanks to CityDesk's scripting ability.

I've got a few pictures at http://bstpierre.org/gallery.html.

The gallery page itself is based on my index template. Each of the photo pages is based on a special "gallery" template. I like to include the full size images (which are around 5-700k), so I've done the extra work of creating smaller files (30k each) for the thumbnails and the photo pages.

Like Darren said, I intend to write an article with some more details, but I haven't gotten around to it. (Maybe after I file my taxes...)

(Once again, talking to myself...)

I figured, hey, my tax return can wait:

Thanks for the nice write up on how you created your site.

Note on the url above: the forum has included the trailing period as part of the url (i.e. "gallery.html."). This is wrong. Here's the right place to go:

http://bstpierre.org/gallery.html
