Not breaking links, when porting existing sites

Joel:

When you moved JOS over to CD, how did you preserve the millions of existing links that other sites have pointing to your pages?

Any recommendations or strategies to not return 404s to users and search engines?

Joel has said that he put up redirects on the old URLs so that they would point to the new URLs.

Yep, I just made a bunch of redirects. I actually wrote a custom script for this purpose.

There was one additional problem... the old URLs were of the form:

http://joel.editthispage.com/stories/storyReader$79

What's weird about that URL? You got it -- no .html extension! So the web server didn't know how to serve the files. To get around this I actually created a subdirectory named storyReader$79 and put an index.html in there with the redirect.
