What do these JavaScript things do?

My eyes glaze over when I read about JavaScript, it's either too much or too little for me. I'm must be the only person who doesn't know exactly what these do or why I should care:

function MM_preloadImages()

function MM_findObj(n, d)

1. What good are they for the surfer?

2. What good are they for the publisher?

3. Can they do any harm?

4. Are they generic? Can I put the same code into any site?

5. Will they cause "normal view" or other problems in in CityDesk?

Thanks

Hi tk,

View Source of sites you go to. It'll be an eye opener with all the js that's used.

If they use an external .js file, go to that URL and you can probably see the file.

ROFL, tk, thanks I needed that ~ it's been a rough day.

Here's how I deal with it. Search goggle for 'free java script' find a bit that does what you want, that is well written and you can understand what it does when you read it - it can be done :)

Copy, paste, use. Yea, yea, the hard corers out there are shuddering (those that didn't just faint away) but IMHO there's nothing wrong with using proven code. Writing my own would be way worse. The biggest problem is most of the free stuff is, for the most part, goofy effects ~ I don't use much java script.

Visit enough of the sites and you'll pick up how to use it very quickly and be writing your own in no time.

Now that wasn't very nice:
"The biggest problem is most of the free stuff is, for the most part, goofy effects ~ I don't use much java script."

Let me rephrase it:
I don't use much java script, I try and do as much as I can with KISS, the CMS and CSS.

Hi Terry, here are some brief Javascript snippets

http://www.telepark.de/webwizards/navigation/citydesk_javascript/mainpage.html

e.g. on how to display the current date / day on a website or how to generate tables with CityDesk and Javascript.

FYI, JavaScript code snippets beginning with "MM_" have usually been generated by some version of Macromedia Dreamweaver.
