Integrate advertising banners/links/statistic

Not an expert on Webdevelopment so I'd appreciate some pointers on how to tackle this.

I'd like to add advertising features to my gardening site http://www.bio-gaertner.de/Articles/index.phtml (in German, sorry!) so I can market banners and advertising links to suppliers. I'll probably place banners on the left side together with the navigation menu (which is always visible), in perhaps 3-5 slots. Some banners might be displayed no matter the actual article selected, others will only display with articles they relate to in particular.

Since I don't intend to make this a full-time job the solution will have to be low-maintenance. I want to define the location and shape of the advertising "slots" in advance, and then insert some code in a strategic place once only (this code is likely to dynamically pass a CD article identifier to a server side program, to be sent back the appropriate banner graphics and link).

All subsequent maintenance of banner data etc. could then take place without re-editing articles and re-publishing the site.  I'm stressing this point as the software I've seen so far seems to rely on copy/pasting a little piece of code  particular to the banner to be displayed.

I also need features for maintenance, banner rotation, counts and limits on instances the banner is displayed, and click-throughs, management reports, perhaps even online reports for individual clients, etc.

Something thought-through but not expensive ;-)

Worst case I may take some free software and try changing it around.

Any pointers as to the most reasonable approach?  Would a snippet of Javascript in CD, backed up by e.g. Perl be a promising route?

Vic,

This might be useful:

Xara's Banner Ad Manager:

http://rotator.xaraonline.com/frontpage.asp

Xara's Banner MAKER:

http://previews.xaraonline.com/PremiumZyBanner&Frame=main&Mode=

Both add-ons are free...

Hope this helps..!

Whoops...  Those were crappy links.  Sorry...

Look for Banner Ad Manager, and Banner Ad Maker, on this site:

  http://www.xaraonline.com

Both are free plugins (along with others).

Thanks for the suggestion Joe!

Looks like this one needs access to the Xara website to run - and that it might be limited to just a few ads.  Perhaps there's something in the approach one could use though...

(ahh- nothing's perfect unless you do it yourself it seems...<g>)

Vic,

I found a few tools you (and perhaps others) might be interested in:

http://www.duware.com/products/category.asp?iCat=9&nCat=Ad%20Management

Scroll to the bottom, and you'll see "DUBanner."  I'm in the process of testing out all of their components.  So far, it's pretty impressive and based on ASP (my favorite characteristic).

Enjoy..!  Hope you find them useful...
