Animated GIFs

Has anybody used a good and SIMPLE gif animator? Cheap would be good and free better, but I don't mind paying if it is functional and easy.

I've used Jasc Animation Shop casually. It lets you edit on a frame by frame basis, and for my simple needs (annoying blinking stuff), it's easy to use and works well.

It comes bundled free with Paintshop Pro (an excellent image editing program by the way, around $70 street price), or you can buy it as a standalone purchase from Jasc for $39.

Again, that's based on my limited experience. I have no idea what else is out there and how it compared.

I use the same Animation Shop. (Paint Shop Pro and) Animation Shop are bundled with a 50 Imation CD-R pack in the likes of PC World (if you're in the UK)

And want to buy some CD-Rs

I would definitely recommend Selteco Bannershop GIF Animator ($39 for single user). See http://www.selteco.com/

It's much easier than building animated gifs "from first principles" using JASC or similar. I've tried both and there's no comparison in terms of ease of use.

You can download a trial version.
