Highlighting the current menu item (revisited)

Several people on the forum have covered this topic quite succinctly for dynamically generated menus, but in my current CD project (a redesign of my website) my navigation links are grouped in two different areas of the page, never in one place, and some menu items will eventually display subdirectory names rather than an individual page.

So I needed a slightly different approach, one for styling a static menu list.  Since most of my sites are ASP-based, I opted to use a VBScript subroutine to control the CSS class in the menu.  However, I'm sure the same basic code approach could be written in Javascript or php.
